Subject:carved lacquered wooden bowl
Posted By: David Thu, Jul 30, 2015 IP: 99.236.194.58

Hello all! Can someone please translate the characters in this large 12" dia carved red lacquered wooden bowl? NOTE: This bowl appears to have some good age to it, as is evident by the bottom (see photos!); any idea as to age? Any assistance with this query would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! David.

I can not help with a translation, but I'm sure someone will provide a translation. However, regarding the age, the rough carving suggest this is tourist quality and quite modern.

Good quality lacquer has dozens of layers of lacquer (the very best perhaps a hundred layers), to the extent that the underlying wood core would not be visibl (unless exposed due to damage).

The carving should be smooth, organic, and highly detailed.

In my opinion, your piece is not lacquered, but painted with enamel.
