Subject:Help with idetifying Bronze vase mark
Posted By: Eric Sat, Sep 12, 2015 IP: 31.52.122.104

Hello

would someone be so kind as to help me ID the mark on this vase as i would like to get it cleaned and don't know if it's valuable of not so something i can attempt myself or should get professionally done

the vase is about twelve inches tall and has a beautiful lizard crawling up one side watching a small beetle which is on the top.

thank you

If you clean it (remove the patina), you will reduce the value significantly.

Cheers,
Sstan

Stan

oh, ok, thanks for that, i was going to give it a good polish, i will not do that now.

it had been used as a candle stick for a while so had wax on but some warm soapy water has brought it up a treat, but not changed the dark patina at all.

any idea on the mark? I'd be keen to know how old it might be or if it's an original, the quality of the work is pretty high and the details very small and clear now it's cleaned up i will post a few more photo's of it

A picture is worth 1000 words. You need a lot more words or a picture. From your description, it sounds like a Meiji era Japanese vase. Typically, these are worth a few hundred dollars.

Sstan

As an example, below is an Ikebana Usabata we purchased this spring for $325. If had carefully calculated the buyer's premium and taxes, I wouldn't have bid as high as I did.

Cheers,
Stan
