Subject:Salters - Info please
Posted By: Sarah Tue, Sep 15, 2015 IP: 108.173.98.20

I have a set of salters that I know nothing about. Very attractive but I am at a loss to know their origin or age.

Thanks so much for your help!

Lacking a mark, there's no hint as to whether these are Western or Asian. The "Moriage" technique of raised decoration on the inside rim is associated with Japanese porcelains, which usually bear markings, but the same kind of work also is found on European wares from Limoges, Meissen and other kilns. You may want to spend some time reviewing various of the latter patterns.

Best regards,

Bill H.

I saw recently in a Wahington State antique shop something very similar: It was described as Japanese made eggshell porcelain salter but those were not signed. Does your set have a signature? That set of 4 was being sold at US $ 89.00 I hope this helps somewhat.

No ... I'm afraid there is no signature and no markings are visible.
