Subject:Mughal ivory?
Posted By: Adam Wed, Nov 18, 2015 IP: 79.141.162.15

What i would like to know is whether this looks too good to be true? It is 115mm x 68 x 1mm.
I have never seen such fine detail, the shading on the horse's neck is done with a single hair.
many thanks Adam.

Nearly all Mughal style paintings on ivory are Indian rather than Persian, from the late 19th c. into the 20th c., and of value in the $50 to $500 range. A few examples from early in the 19th c. with good painting can bring in the thousands of dollars. However, works on paper from the 16-18th c. are what bring the big $$$$.

Yours is of good subject matter, a tiger hunt, and okay quality. Probably 19th c., but the age is not as important as the quality of the painting.

I just recently reviewed a few very fine examples of this style of work. Not the same subject matter, but you can compare and decide for yourself how your piece ranks.
