Hello all! Can anyone identify the mark on this 7 1/2" high ginger jar for me? It is a seal style mark with 2 characters and a lion holding a sword and a rising sun in the background. Any assistance with this query would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! David.

The symbol of a lion holding a sword with a sun over its back,is that of ancient and modern Persia(Iran).

This mark -imitating a lacquer seal- is known as Chinese. A rather recent production I guess.

If this symbol is Chinese, please tell the Iranians. It is on their flag, their coinage and passports.I cannot find it on any Chinese works, yet it is on Iranian products of many varied types.

You're right about the lion (Shir-e Khorshid)but at the the Gotheburg site the mark is identified as Chinese. Herewith an example.

Hi,
This is the Coat of Arms of Persia or Iran.
I have bowl with similar logo.
This was part of the flag of Iran just before 1979 revolution.

These products with coat of arms of Persia are being made in China but for the Persian market.
We have many other examples such as bohemian crystals or glasses made for Persian Market in 17,18 and 19 century with pictures of different Shah of Persia and also coat of arms.
These bowls and vases are also made in China for Persian Market.
I am afraid many auction houses experts are not qualified enough in these fields and making many mistakes when listing these items.
