Subject:Japanese painting of Samurai EDO period - Artist? Mon ID? Date?
Posted By: Tim Sun, Dec 27, 2015 IP: 76.110.209.69

I could use some help, please.

This Japanese scroll painting has unfortunately been mounted to board and acid has browned the silk. However, the artistry seems to be very nicely done with some fine detail to the armor and clothing of each samurai.

There seems to be a date of 70....70th year of a particular reign? Also, there is a signature, but of what artist I do not know.

The samurai riding a horse with his back to the viewer has a mon crest of the Tomoe family (futatsudomoe). The samurai riding a horse facing the viewer has what look like a bird crest, but I have not been able to identify it. Any thoughts?

I do note that his helmet has a dragon, so I am wondering if this is a clan serving directly under the emperor during the Edo period.

Thank you for the help!

Looks pretty nice to me, but I don't know anything about Japanese pictures. The inscription has an artist's name and seal I can't read; the 70 thing is in the right column and reads 七十一翁, referring to the artist "as a 71 year old man".

Thanks! Qi Baishi often signed that way....Did he learn this from the Japanese?

Some great detail to the armor, but glued down to masonite, and glazed over like many 19th c. oil paintings have, which has added to the yellowing.

It is probably worthy of restoration, but the cost for this painting would likely break me.
