Subject:Help with Rare Chinese Polychrome Tulip Vase
Posted By: Elke Tue, Jan 05, 2016 IP: 78.50.225.227

Hello,
I would be very pleased to get your humble opinion about this tulip vase:
It is 24cm/10,3 inch high, weight is 1475 gramm. The basic colour of the pottery is somewhat gray- or blueish, like goose-egg-shell-colour, not white. The coloured enamels are shiny-translucent, apart from the red-orange tone, which seems more powder-like and has no glaze/shine.
What can you tell to the probable age of the vase, and the meaning/theme of the pictures.
What could it be worth?

Thank you very much.

Elke, Germany

Very nice! I am sure more experienced members will offer a precise translation of the mark and advise you as to what degree your vase can be described as 'rare'.

Although the famille verte style could be as old as Kangxi period (17-18th c), the use of a mark is not typical for that period, the porcelain would be much more white, and the foot rings would not be so gritty and rough.

I think it is 19th c., but nevertheless quite beautiful.

The mark reads down vertically through its two middle characters as "Qianlong", then across to the left horizontally through the remaining two as "Nian Zhi", suggesting apocryphally that it was made during the Qianlong Reign. The painting style looks more like late-19th or early 20th century.

Best regards,

Bill H.
