Subject:jade censer
Posted By: David Tue, Mar 01, 2016 IP: 99.236.194.58

Hello all! Can someone please tell me how old this jade/ jadeite fu dog censer might be? It measures: 5 3/4" wide (handle to handle) x 4 1/8" in diameter x approx. 3 3/4" high; it does have obvious signs of wear and use and some condition issues i.e. the lid is missing and a small section of the carving has broken off! Any assistance with this query would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! David.

Hi, David:

I do not believe your piece was made of real jade (nephrite or jadeite) and you can confirm by doing a scratch test on it (scratch it with a pocket knife and see what happens). It was probably made of some types of soft stone such as serpentine. Its carving was kind of horrific (sorry) and therefore I believe it is modern. I sincerely hope you did not pay a fortune for it and or can get your money back if you did. Again, no pun intended.

Very rough carving, not Jade, could be a Serpentine. no age to this one.

It is clearly missing a lid with the rim being double stepped (it probably was perforated), and the bowl portion is very discolored as well as the cracks and the undersides of the carvings indicating it does have some age to it. Definitely not anything that is newly carved, and may be quite old, though I agree that it isn't the best jade to begin with nor carver who produced it.
