Subject:Help with spinach Nephrite jade bat dragon bi disc feng shui item??
Posted By: lulu Wed, Mar 09, 2016 IP: 172.250.64.175

I recently inherited some items I need help identifying.
I believe this is nephrite jade, it is cool to the touch, about 10oz in weight and can not be scratched with a steak knife. Any thoughts to the time period or value, if any?

Dragon, coin and bat. Yes, I too think that it is Nephrite, Probably last Century, Not Qing. Only brings good fortune if you wear it.

While the color and texture of your jade piece did appear to be that of nephrite in your pictures, but I have reservations of calling its material nephrite because of all these white carving lines that were all over it. Usually this would be an indication that its material could be scratched by metal, otherwise these carving lines would not be white. I was surprised to see you said it could pass the scratch test. May be you should re-test it with a pocket knife or needle? Or perform a density test on it?

Also, based on the quality of its carving, I am having troubles in believing it would be anything but modern, probably made in the last 30 years. If it was indeed made in the last century, that it would be that of Qing dynasty which ended in 1911. I believe the possibility of that is simply low. Since I am not a jade expert, therefore I can indeed be wrong and I would like to apologize in advance. Super

Thank you for the replies.
I too have wondered why there is white in carving, It can't be scratched with knife, scissors, or any pins, I've tried them, so this is not soap stone or any soft stone like that.
I took it in today to a local gem shop, they said their guess was nephrite jade as well, as it doesn't look like Chrysoprase etc.
Either way, I like the bat a lot.

I have seen these carvings in HK jADE MARKET,they came from China, and if you see white from scratching it,it is not jade, and may not even be stone,if it breaks easily,it could even be ceramic.
Modern 20th c stuff they haul back from China
