Subject:Identification of Chinese Jade Seal (1)
Posted By: Jan Fri, May 06, 2016 IP: 105.233.68.128

Can anyone please help in identifying this seal. Besides the seal, it is signed on the side. It is around 5cm tall. Alternatively, can anyone give it's approximate age? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Jan

Not jade, but possibly a very valuable piece of HuangTian stone from ShouShan in Fujian province.

The raised inscription on the side reads Hua Hao Yue Yuan 花好月圓 which is commonly used to congratulate someone on their wedding.

The seal face inscription at this time escapes me, but looks like either
Dan Zheng Zhi Tian Qi 旦正支天豈 or Shi Zhi Tian Qi 是支天豈 but I can't make a lot of sense from either yet.

旦正支天豈 - "Have a good day!"

Maybe?

Soapstone i. e shoushan jade... Modern carving... Up to the bottom inscription.

Try shoushan shi /shoushan jade on eBay you should be able to see a few.

Common stuff found on tourist markets all-around China.

I disagree... If you can't be constructive, rather don't post...

Hi there.

My bad I was actually trying to be constructive, let me try again:

original tianhuang source is very scarce, the historic vein from witch it was extracted is almost dry. Real Tianhuang jade is supposed to show specific inclusion that your shoushan Soapstone seal for tourist don't display. (try reference books or museum pieces for comparison).

Soapstone (hence it's name) is very soft material, therfore easy to make it look old. Still, carving style of your seal is not consistent with ancient carving style. (not to mention script carving).

As for good modern shoushan seal I would Google shoushan seal and look for the bright color ones, white to red, green etc... translucent and colorful ones are the best, carving style is also very important. Indeed shoushan "jade" can be beautiful.

As for tuff like yours, I repeat my advice : I would better check eBay where there is plenty of junk available, I am confident you will find some very similar to yours.

Always happy to agree to disagree.

Regards.
P.
