Subject:Unusual Chinese porcelain & wood panel - Translation needed
Posted By: Tim Sun, May 08, 2016 IP: 107.145.60.104

I'm traveling, so I'm not able edit my photos to fit 500kb size needed to upload, so I'm attaching a link.

Bought this pair of panels. I think the caligraphy is a the key to fully understanding the porcelain plaques. Could someone help translate writing and seals? Artist?

My friend said it is dated xin si and signed Xue, but was not able to offer any further translation.

The grisaille depictions of archaic vessels reminds me of a Tongzhi mark & period vase I once owned that had been decorated with similar archaic vessels. However, I have never seen another of similar design, so I am interested in understanding the meaning of this design. Is it a rebus?

I am hoping the caligraphy carved in the wood provides some clues as to the signifigance of the panels.

Thanks!
Tim
