Subject:Painting on silk
Posted By: Candice Tue, Jun 21, 2016 IP: 50.161.54.132

I'm hoping someone can help me identify the signature which appears in the lower left-hand side of this painting. I believe it to be from the early 1900's. It is quite large (about 4' by 5') and is painted on silk.
Any help would be appreciated!

nice Japanese picture, the seal reads 芳曉 but I can't make out the inscription, which is two other characters. date perhaps more recent than early 20th.

Thank you, rat. I have some information about the painting that was researched by someone else awhile ago. They were told the artist was Hogyo or Hokyo in the Shijo-Ha Style. There are other notes but I don't know how they relate: from early 19th century- Maruyam Okyo; Nihon Shoga-Kotto Daijiten-book from 1915 p. 1064; lived in Kyoto

Not sure either as I don't know much about Japanese painters but don't think this relates very obviously to Maruyama Okyo, who was an 18th century painter. "Nihon Shoga-Kotto Daijiten" is a dictionary of some sort, possibly a biographical dictionary of Japanese painters where your researcher found Hogyo/Hokyo, or possibly a dictionary of artist's seals that identified Hogyo as your artist. one of the Japan experts who has similar reference works at their disposal should be able to help.
