Subject:Chinese Auction Houses

Hi

Has anyone outside of Chinese used a Chinese Auction House to sell any works and how easy was it to do. Can anyone recommend one for Chinese Contemporary Art?

Many thanks.

I live in Florida. This year I've sold through auctions in Hong Kong and Beijing. Previously, I sold through auction in Malaysia. All times the transactions went smoothly.

As far as a recommendation, it is hard to say without knowing more specifically what you are planning to sell and its value.

Can you provide specifics on your artwork, year of creation, and approximate value?

So I checked Artnet.com and only found 1 auction record from 2013 that is consistent with the sale price you mention. Unfortunately, that time there was tremendous self promotion by various artists who would bid up their works to high amounts in hopes of acheiving future high sales. Rarely if ever had this strategy worked.

I can't say for certain, but in the absence of more auction records, I suspect you would not acheive similar results, regardless of which auction you use.

Looks like he is an accomplished artist, but the collector's market is incredibly selective as to rewarding only the most accomplished artists.

Hello John,

Chinese new/contemporary artists like Cheng Zhiguang observe fluctuating demands as they have yet to truly make themselves into a 'bluechip artist'

What we typically see with artists at a stage in their career like Cheng Zhiguang, is a representation in smaller-to-mid sized auction houses in Asia with the occasional appearance in larger auction houses in the west (it really depends on demand solicited from each auction house)

You could always look up artists or pieces on our website to see if there are any upcoming auctions or past auctions that have hosted your piece of art. And if by chance you do find it, you could always contact the auction house directly via our website and ask them if they could feature your piece at their next sale.

I hope this helped!

Hi

After a bit of research I have put together a bio of Cheng Jiguang who does seem to be an established artist. Can anybody help me further?

"Cheng Jiguang, a well known contemporary Chinese artist, was born in Chongqing in 1956. He is an academician of the Contemporary Library of Calligraphy and Painting Academy of Arts, a committee member of the Chinese Arts Research Institute, a member of the Chongqi Artists Association, and a senior honorary advisor of the Singapore Shen Zhou Arts Academy. He has exhibited throughout the world and won numerous prizes for his realistic artworks. His work and biography is included in numerous publications such as The Chinese Expo and Collection Guide, the Florilegium of Chinese Artists and the Directory of Chinese Contemporary Celebrities."

I have also come across another of his works for sale at:
