Subject:Japanese Bronze and Silver Sculpture identificaton
Posted By: Nels Gullerud Wed, Jan 25, 2017 IP: 173.170.135.243

Acquired a fantastic bronze and silver statue of gnarled pine tree with male and female cranes on branch with 2 babies in nest. Great detail, birds are in silver, tree is in bronze. I think it is about 14" tall and it stands on a fine rosewood stand. The only marks I could find were on the underside of the standing crane. Can anyone help me identify it or tell me more about it? Not sure if the birds are silver or a plate or overlay on bronze.

You lucky man. What a piece!

This is superb quality. Seems to be silver. Signed and sealed 'Mitsuhisa' (光久). Date c. 1900-1910.

Cfr. another okimono at Bonhams, probably from the same maker.

Guy.

Thanks Guy! I really love it - found one similar online without a maker attribution (see Link)

So.. Am I correct that the first two kanji characters are the signature and the bottom mark is a date seal? It was confusing to me.

Nels,

Both the signature and seal do read 光久 (Mitsuhisa).

The okimono is not dated but IMO, the somewhat overwhelming style and the use of silver, are indications for the late Meiji to early Taisho period (c. 1910-20). The similar piece that you mention is dated Taisho period.

Guy.
