Subject:Li Keran?
Posted By: Lee Tue, Mar 21, 2017 IP: 76.125.71.171

I recently purchased this scroll from the estate of a collector who had owned it for more than 20 years. Clearly it's "in the manner of" Li Keran. My question- is there any chance that this could actually be a Li Keran? The seal throws me- I can't find a similar that Li actually used. And the scroll has a tag attached on the back with inscription that I need help with(see pic). Could someone please translate? Thank you very much in advance.

You can find the same composition here with different seals: http://www.artnet.com/artists/li-keran/%E7%89%A7%E7%89%9B%E5%9B%BE-QPhoCLEIw75piFX-WhWOZQ2

Yours is likely a copy of this or another similar work of Li's. In particular compare the lines/brushstrokes used to form the water buffalo bodies themselves.

Your titleslip reads "Li Keran, Bathing Oxen"

Thanks much!
I had sent this to Christies after posting to the Asian art forum, and they informed me that it was a print. I'm not sure how they can actually tell by the photos, unless the title tag gives it away. As for myself, it's very hard for me to tell the difference between what must be a high quality print and original ink-on-paper, especially being backed as it is. Live and learn! Thanks again.
