I believe you're correct as to it being a water dropper, used I think in the mixing of ink on the ink stone. The reddish color of the glaze hints that it may be from the Shiwan kilns in the Guangzhou (old Canton) suburb of Foshan. It has the form of a pomegranate, which also is red when ripe. In fact there is a famous Shiwan glaze described as 'pomegranate red'. Possibly 19th-early 20th century.
