Message At first I thought could be pommel of an edged weapon, but seeing the tang was decorated on one side suggests used as part of statue of some kind. Have not seen the 'vajra' thunderbolt treated quite that way before. 'Several generations' would go back to around year 1900, British Raj period, look like possibly that style to me.
