Subject:Info on Antique Saucer Age, Pattern and Inscription Needed
Posted By: Elke Tue, Dec 11, 2018 IP: 92.193.101.48

Here is another one, an interesting saucer from the flea-market, on which I could not find more infos.

Can anybody please tell something towards the pattern, origin, age and inscription of this interesting saucer? It measures ca 9 inch/23 cm diameter, ca 1,3 inch/3,5 cm height.

Why is there this dark, blue-greyish spot left in the middle of the saucer? Was it maybe a belonging to a centerpiece, vase, kandi, pot or bowl? The centered dot is slightly raised and and worn/tarn off.

I am curious for your answers and am always delighted and grateful by the knowledge some individuel in this board have - thank you very much for sharing.

Greetings from god old Germany,
Elke

Sanpo
Family brand of the wealthy Arita merchant Hisatomi Yojibee, who revitalized the Arita Ware in the 1840-es after roughly a 100 year interval.

The mark reads down and across from the right in two stacks as "Made by Zoshuntei Sampo" (Zoshuntei Sampo Zo). This was a well known studio that painted Arita (formerly "Hizen") ceramics circa the late 19th century. I tend to believe your dish may be a stand for larger vase, planter or censer, among other possibilities. Its decoration is rather tame compared the usual items I've seen from the Meiji period with this mark. Here's a piece bearing the signature in its usual red color. It has a bronze collar and is missing its cover. The elevated feet suggest it may have been a censer.

Also please see the link for the auction result of a large floor vase by this studio.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thank you very much for sharing you knowledge and the further information about the origin of this item, dear I. Nagy and also dear Bill. This was very helpful and interesting. I am always very happy and impressed by your potential and rich experience and knowledge in japanese/chinese antiques and I really envy the capability in reading signs on it.

Greetings, Elke
