Yakshi

A column behind the yakshis left shoulder places this well-carved composition within an architectural setting. The pillar is surmounted by a square element carved with a quatrefoil motif, and a rampant leonine beast emerges from behind. With her right arm draped languidly over her head, the yakshi gazes down with a benevolent expression. Her almond-shaped eyes are framed by finely-arched brows, and her mouth, recessed at the corners, conveys a pleasant smile. A floral pin with strands of pearls adorns the top of her head, and she wears several necklaces, including one with a central cruciform pendant and a second, longer string of beads.

Yakshis are semi-divine goddesses that are a common motif in Indian art, appearing in Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain contexts. Frequently associated with nature and fertility, images of yakshis are often posed seductively in order to emphasize their fecundity and the beauty of the female form.

Provenance:
Collection of R. W. Leybourne Callaghan, alias Callaghan of India,
Managing Director of Roche India and Honorary Consul for Ireland in Bombay (acquired in the late 1960s)
