Marble Torso of a Standing Buddha
Detail: back

A large white marble sculpture of the Buddha with long flowing robes open at the breast and an elegantly tied sash.

The spear like motifs at the bottom of the robes are known designs in the textile art of the Northern Dynasties.

The treatment of the drapery is typical of Buddhist sculptures of the Eastern Wei dynasty (534-550 AD).
