2. A Gilt Lacquer image of a Daoist Deity
China
Circa 18th century
Height: 11 ½” (29.5cm)
A Gilt Lacquer image of a Daoist Deity

The bearded deity, possibly one of the constellation gods, wears an elaborate headdress and loose, flowing robes with incised edges which crosses over at his chest and is gathered by a sash which hangs to his feet. It is incised with flaming pearl motifs above a fringed 'v', flanked by his upturned toed, Tang-style shoes. A scarf with incised patterns to its edges drapes over his shoulders and flows down, terminating in 'flick ups' behind his feet. He stands on a footed square base, holding a tablet (Chinese hu) at his breast. To the reverse his robe has an elaborate, fringed 'apron' with incised and punched patterns beneath the 'metal plaques' of his sash. Losses to the gilding.
