Subject:Need help to identify marks on large pottery bowl
Posted By: Mary Wed, Sep 11, 2019 IP: 2606:a000:804c:1500:

I struggle with dating Chinese and Japanese porcelain/pottery. Old pieces can feel new and new pieces can feel old. Timeless :) I have this large bowl with a painted signature on the base. My guess is Japanese Imari ware circa 1900. Could someone help identify the mark and provide an estimated date?
Grateful for any help,
Mary

Not Imari ware, but Kutani ware circa 1900-1920.
The mark reads: Kutani 九谷 Zo 造 = Made in Kutani.
Regards,
Martin.

Your plate/charger is of Japanese make, the mark reading 'Kutani zo' (kutani made.) I would also say that your estimation of age was about right, being late 19th, early 20th century

Edit: I realise that I have made a mistake, according to the Gotheburg.com page on Kutani, the final character is tsukuru, although the translation is the same. You can find more information here: https://www.gotheborg.com/marks/kutani.shtml
