Subject:Please Assist with Mark on Meiji Period Covered Jar
Posted By: Steve Gridley Wed, Mar 17, 2021 IP: 96.244.150.12

I just picked up this Kutani covered jar. The best I can make out it reads: Dai Nippon Kutani Tsukuru. However, Iā€™m not sure about the fourth mark. I estimate late Meiji Period (1880 ā€“ 1890). I would appreciate a verification and/or correction.

The mark reads: Dai Nippon Matsumura ę¾ę‘ Zo (or Tsukuru), so "made by Matsumura", with a sloppy written Matsumura name, which is normal on Matsumura marks.

Matsumura Kusuke 1st (1844-1912). In 1878 Kusuke founded the Kaiyosha, a store in Yokohama handling ceramics for overseas export (signed with Kaiyosha), which was dissolved in 1885. Next Kusuke started his own porcelain factories in Aichi and Kobe. Wares from these factories bear the name Matsumura.

So the date of your jar is somewhere between 1885 and 1912.
Regards,
Martin.

Thanks Martin! The form indicated to me an export piece.
