Subject: 1862 namamugi incident related awate-e diptych

Awate-e satiric prints describe opposite attitudes of urban japanese people after the killing of British merchant in 1862. I am looking for information about the scene (what do the hanging texts say...) to check if it is really an awate print.

Francis,

The Metro Library date the print to the Meiji Restoration period so I doubt it's related to the 1862 namamugi incident.
My modest opinion is that this crowd of craftsmen, merchants, wives, husbands, ladies etc... are probably talking about the "good old days" some happy with the new regime and others maybe nostalgic of the old system ....who knows. Finally times haven't really changed 🤣

Thanks a lot Lucienne,
It might also be about the sonno-joi movement against foreigners, as a consequence of the Nanamugi incident...
