Subject:Need help with two horse ink drawings
Posted By: GiuliaB Sun, Feb 25, 2024 IP: 77.108.5.213

Hello everyone, recently I bought at a yard sale two ink paintings of two black horses, of which I linked some photos. A friend of mine says that they could be Xu Beihong artworks, but I have no expertise to say if they are or not. Unfortunately I don't know much about them and I can't read Chinese, so I cannot understand fully what is written on them.

Can anybody help me to identify the author and what is written on them?

Thank you so much.

Hi GiuliaB Sun, although I am not an expertise on Chinese Ink paintings or Xu Beihong's artworks, but judging from the use of stroke and ink, I believe these are not Xu's paintings. Also I've been told that Xu never draw the eyes of his horses. I have attached some of Xu's authentic horse paintings in similar postures for your reference.

In terms of the writings, they both say the date of the painting and 悲鴻(Beihong).

Best regards,

Eric

Thank you so much Eric for your kind response. I had noticed too that one of the horses has eyes and the other not. Can I ask you if you can send me the translation of the date? I am curious when those two drawings where made.
Best regards.

The first one writes 丙子, the only 丙子 year during Xu's lifetime was 1936. The second one is hard to tell because it only says 庚 and there were multiple 庚X years but it should be one of the following years: 1930, 1940, or 1950.

Hi, I am not an expert in Xu Beiong's work either, but I don't think the two are fakes. In his youth Xu went to Japan to study art. To me the posture of the animals looks very "Japanese style" and the different use of the brush may be due to his inexperience. I suggest you to take the two drawings to an antique dealer specialized in chinese art.
Good luck!

The pictures are dated in Minguo (Republic) era、
①
丗三年冬 In winter of the 33rd Year (1944)

廿八年四月 In April of the 28th Year (1939)

丗四年長夏 In Summer of the 34th Year (1945)

With regards,
I.Nagy
