Subject:Small White Jade Vase

Jade experts,

I'd like to get your opinions on the small vase below.

We were out of town for my birthday and stopped in an antique store. We saw this small white jade vase and my wife and I liked it and asked the price. My eyeball measurement puts it at about 3.5 inches tall (without the stand). The price: $4000.

That is more than we could afford. I'd like to get expert opinions (Ernest?) on age, quality, and what you think it is worth.

Cheers,
Stan

Hi Stan,
It's difficult to judge jade's with just one picture.
In my opinion this miniature vase is not very old. From the second half of the 20th Century.
The asking price is full retail and some for this carving.
White jade generally is expensive nephrite if it's mutton fat. Very sought after.
Russian white jade which is often sold as mutton is plentiful and not very expensive.

Hi Mark,

Thank you for your analysis. I thought the execution was mediocre. For example, the rings on the handles are part of the handle and not separate and the other features are not as fine as I would expect for the price.

I just took one picture for my "records". I put it out here as an afterthought. Next time I'll plan ahead.

Supposedly, this piece is from a (reputed) good collection. I am wondering if I should push to see other pieces. With the high price, it may not be worth the effort. Jade isn't my area - though I would like a few more pieces.

Cheers,
Stan
