Subject:seeking Translation on a 19th Century Chinese Tea Dust Bottle Vase
Posted By: Lee C. Thu, Mar 26, 2020 IP: 2605:e000:1419:89e4:

Hello, I seeking information as to the 2 character mark on a tea dust vase. I believe this is Chinese Qing or Republic period porcelain. Thanks, Lee C.

Your vase may be Japanese, as the bottom character in the mark is written in the Japanese form. I'm undecided as to what the first character may be. Possibly 千恵 (machine translated as 'Senkeie'), meaning 'Manifold Blessings'. I'll happily accept corrections.

The glaze appears possibly not to be teadust, in my opinion. Many of the flecks have angular forms, which in my experience are not found in the crystalline 'blooms' that form in the iron-based glaze of true teadust porcelains. Here is an example in a Guangxu (1875-1908) mark & period Chinese teadust 'fanghu' vase with famille rose overglaze decoration.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thanks for this input as to the glaze and mark. I am a neophyte to asian porcelains and glazes. I posted close-up photos of glazes to better show details you described. Also posted a photograph of an inscription on double gourd vase with painted cranes and which I thought was likely Japanese in origin. Any inputs would be helpful. With Regards, Lee C.
