Subject:Vintage (antique?) Chinese Brush Painting help
Posted By: Sharon Wed, Jan 13, 2021 IP: 70.91.133.25

I have these two paintings from my mother's aunts and I would like as much information as possible (age, artist/seal, text translation, etc.). They are about 15"wide x 35" tall. I tried translation apps and web searches to no avail, except there's a similar painting on EBay selling for $800 USD with the same seal, the seller says the artist is "Wu." Thanks so much

Pic.1-2,
繼榮丙申年春時書耶魯大學
Painted in Spring of the Year of Fire-Monkey (2016) at Yale University by Jirong
Seal,
繼榮 - Jirong - Given name

Pic.3-4,
松向歌舞 - Singing and dancing towards the pine
繼榮丙申年仲秋時書新港
耶魯大学
Painted in Mid-Autumn of the Year of Fire-Monkey (2016) at New Haven, Yale University by Jirong
Seal,
繼榮 - Jirong - Given name

Probably a Chinese student at Yale University.
The seller doesn't know what he sells. $800 is a ridiculous price for them.

With regards,
I. Nagy

Thanks for the translation, but I'm a little confused. My mother gave these to me several years ago and she said they were in her elderly aunts' house at the time of their deaths in the early 1980s, so I'm confused about the 2016 date. Could it be 1956?

Dear Sharon,
Yes, it could be 1956, (but not 1896).
This is why it is good to know something about the provenance of the picture.

With regards,
I.Nagy
