Signature reads,
山村柳祥謹冩 - Carefully painted by Yamamura Ryūshō
Yamamura Ryūshō (Year of birth and death unknown)
Was active in the 1850s- 1870s.
He was a disciple of Utagawa (Goseda) Hōryū (1827-1892), who set up a workshop in Yokohama. Hōryū's practice was to paint portraits commissioned by foreigners in wash on silk, basing the portrayals on photographs. His photographic painting on silk grew very popular, such as portraits of foreign man and woman in Japanese dress.
