Subject:Help Identify Object's Origin & Purpose

I purchased this little frog bottle at an estate auction. The auctioneer's description was that it was made by a famous artist during the Meiji era. I bid on it because I liked it, not because of the description. I thought I would check with the Forum's experts to see if I can gain an understanding of its origin and/or purpose.

Japanese, late 19th/early 20th century (Meiji period), and it's a vesta case, or matchsafe.
