Subject:Bodhidharma (Daruma) painting
Posted By: jeff sutton Sun, Mar 17, 2024 IP: 2600:6c67:2cf0:c10:2

Hello, just wondering if anyone had thoughts on the age of this painting of Daruma that I recently acquired. It's framed but not under glass so I am able to get good photo's. I have posted additional higher quality pictures at https://imgur.com/gallery/ZebXh9Q

This painting is inflicted with most possible damages. While water damage and bigger wholes are created quickly, the painting also shows a loss of the paper surface created by small bugs eating through the surface and than small parts chip away.
This is a long work. With some bad luck and a soft paper this could be found earliest in works 250 years old.
Without knowing the exact quality of the painted paper its difficult to say, but I would expect a date before 1700 based on this damage.

We had an earlier post that gives you another example of this kind of damage:

Missing about more than 50 % of the painted surface its also a bit tricky to judge the quality. brush strokes get distorted, contrast are changed, ink layers on other ink layers could vanish completely...
