Subject:Permissions to use image
Posted By: Jack Eden Tue, Sep 11, 2018 IP: 184.166.160.129

Hello,

I am working on an article on Wikipedia, "History of lute-family instruments." One of the next sections I want to cover includes the Sogdians and their influence as traders, spreading their music, dance and instruments.

I wondered if it would be possible to secure permission to use a version of one of the Silver Jug images on Wikipedia. I know they belong to Ulrich von Schroeder, and I wondered if you could put me in contact for the purpose of asking.

He would need to know that images can only go on Wikipedia if they are made public domain, or licenced under a Creative Commons licence, such as Creative Commons Attribution 2.5 Generic. This would allow some commercial use (and I guarantee, people will eventually look at the image and re-use it, if it is on Wikipedia). A creative commons licence would require users to be attribute him as the creator if it were commercially used.

Pros and cons... On one hand, the version of the image he released would be public forever. On the other hand, releasing a low or medium resolution version to Wikipedia would expose his work to more people.

I am linking to the Wikipedia page which I am working on. Please understand, I just began it, cutting and pasting, and it has a long way to go.

I am also uploading one of the images I would like to use a version of.
