A beautifully wrought repousse throneback, or prabhamandala, originally mounted behind an image of unknown iconography. This iconic composition, derived from classical Indian sources and seen throughout the art of Nepal and Tibet, depicts mythical creatures typically portrayed to protect and celebrate the image it surrounds. While the whole is surmounted by Garuda, vehicle of Vishnu, the main image might as easily have been Buddhist or Hindu.
