Detail: The Museum of East Asian Art will for the first time present a selection of 95 of its best works of Japanese painting. The works will be grouped thematically and provide an insight into the development of painting in both the Japanese (wayō) and the Chinese (karayō) style, both of which were used and developed side by side over the centuries. The exhibition includes narrative depictions of deities, heroes and ordinary people, large –scale screens decorated with the flowers and birds of the four seasons, and a large number of other sujets. Other focal points will include portraits of poets, representations of beautiful women, landscapes in the style of the scholar-painters and finally works reflecting Western influences. The exhibition comprises works by all the major schools, such as Kanō, Tosa, Rinpa, Nanga and Maruyama-Shijō. |
