Detail: This is one of four exhibitions as part of `China in Dresden in China' during 2008 following an intensive dialogue over many years between the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden and renowned Chinese cultural institutions. This particularly exhibition prepared by curators of the National Art Museum of China in Beijing presents a new aspect of Chinese contemporary art, which has enjoyed such great success around the world in recent years: namely, works of art which use the traditional Chinese technique and idiom of ink to develop a modern form of visual expression. The notion that everything is immersed within transformation has always been a recognized and fundamental notion in Chinese philosophy. The exhibition considers and redefines the meaning of transformation in a global context. Whilst showing the diversity, complexity and depth of contemporary wash-and-ink works, it also invites the viewer to explore and discover the eternal and essential elements of the ink tradition. Sculpture, installation and calligraphy works have also been included pushing the boundaries of ink painting further to a realm that has not been hitherto entered. |
