From New Year Prints to Propaganda Posters: Selections from the China Archives of Publications

Hong Kong Museum of History
1/F Main Lobby,
Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon, Hong Kong
Mar 12, 2008 To Jun 16, 2008

Detail: This retrospective of the development of propaganda posters in China gives an insight in the visual art forms that contributed to the artistic techniques and styles of propaganda posters and what enabled this genre to thrive and flourish in different political periods. Propaganda posters are witness to the past, imprints of everyday life, icons of social culture of the time and depictions of people's pursuit of better lives. The exhibition gives the audience an appreciation of the unique artistic charm of propaganda posters and, through the story of their evolution, an insight into the vicissitudes of Chinese history. The collection is drawn from the China Archives of Publications established in 1950 and the only institution in China specializing in the acquisition, collection and management of publications distributed since the founding of the PRC. It holds a large collection of some 50,000 propaganda posters in 20,000 categories that were published after 1950. The exhibition is complemented by New Year prints and calendar posters from the museums in Hong Kong.
