Detail: Newly established Mingei Arts Gallery will be exhibiting at an international art fair abroad for the first time. In addition to the Japanese textiles in which they specialize, they will be bringing sculptural works, such as a Confucian figure from China carbon dated to 1305-1444, formerly in collections in France and the US. As many figures of this type were destroyed by imperial decree in 1530, this is a rare survivor. A second important item is a mid-16th century Japanese mask representing a sumo wrestler, which was offered as a gift to the general and feudal lord Kazutoyo Yamaouchi, perhaps by Oda Nobunaga, one of the founders of Edo. Until recently, the mask was owned by a direct descendant of Kazutoyo Yamaouchi.
