Detail: Christophe Hioco Gallery returns with a collection of ancient Vietnamese art. This year's selection comes from a well-known Swiss private collection, some of the works showing similarities to pieces in Geneva's Barbier-Müller Museum. The Dong Son bronzes reveal that culture's emphasis on animal representation, while the slightly later Giao Chi pieces show Chinese influence. Among the former is a perfume burner surmounted by a pelican holding a weight in its beak, a standard of measure in exchanges and barter. A ceremonial vessel on a high foot exemplifies the Giao Chi artworks; Vietnamese motifs decorate the handles and a Chinese-style lattice imitating clouds forms the foot. A sampling of Buddhist and Hindu statues as well as Chinese terracottas will also be on display. |
