Detail: Kusa Zoushi (illustrated books) is an important chapter in the history of the art of the writing and printing of the Japanese book. The literary and graphic arts were intertwined and dependent on each other throughout the process of Japan’s cultural and social development. The printed books included wood block illustrations (soushi-e). Exhibited are 120 wood block prints by well known artists including Utagawa Kuniyosh, Ando Hiroshige, Utagawa Kuniteru, Utagawa Yoshiiku, Utagawa Yoshitsuya, and Baisotei Gengyo. Also on exhibit are many wood block prints by lesser known artists, whose works are of as high quality as those of the more famous artists. |
