Rupert has been collecting textiles for over 20 years and was instrumental in reesablishing the Wangden Carpet production in the village of Wangden, Tibet some 15 years ago. Exploring Tibet's vast landscape in the early 90's Rupert set out to find the village of Wanden which for centuries priyor had been the production center of the "Wangen Style" meditation and runner carpet used by monesataries and monks throughout Tibet. Known for their "Warp faced backing" and thick pile with geometric designs this tradition of carpet was near extinct due to the destruction that took place during the Cultural Revolution. Weaving in this remote village re-emerged with the help of this intrepid traveler and collector when he decided to help the village re-establish a Wangden Carpet production. For the past 15 years Rupert has been exhibitioning these carpets at Indigo Gallery and now has produced a book on the Tibetan Weaving Tradition.

A limited amount of books are available and textiles and carpets will be for sale that appear in the book. The rugs are venerable examples of Gampa Dzong, Wangden masterpieces as well as an extremley esoteric saddle top from the 18th century

Rupert Smith, collecter, publisher and visionnaire of this exhibition and book will teach the reader how to identify and date Tibetan rugs and textiles from the 15th to the early 20th century.
