Subject:Pre Nortaki Porcelain
Posted By: Brenda Thu, Apr 29, 2010 IP: 71.127.133.4

I have these two pieces of porcelain that .. I Think that I have been successful in identifying the maker. (I had help)

There is no information on the Gotheborg site, as far as this gentleman's name so I came here to see if any of you could point me in other directions, for further research?

The following is what I have so far.

Thank You,
Brenda

The mark reads 春光製 "Made by Harumitsu." This is the mark of 加藤春光 Katoh Harumitsu, who established a pottery in Seto, Aichi Prefecture, around 1875. His wares began to be sold by the 森村組 Morimura Group, which ultimately established Noritake. Thus, his wares are so-called "pre-Nippon," early examples of Japanese ware for Western markets, and are sometimes grouped with "Old Noritake," though actually pre-dating Noritake.

Hello Brenda,

First, I would like to thank you for the nice clear photographs.

The creamer (or milk) and sugar are a Western style, yes, made in Japan for export.

All I can add is the gold moriage decoration, especially the hexagonal shapes imitating tortoise shell pattern and raised white dots, is consistent with early to mid Showa Period pieces.

They are very nice functional and decorative pieces that appear to have been well cared for.

Best regards,
Michael

There Really doesn't seem to be any information on Katoh Harumitsu and his porcelain.

Don't tell me he is a first on this board too?

You have a cream pitcher and sugar pot of general type made in huge numbers for export to west. They would have been with matching teapot and at least 4 cups and saucers.

Congratulations on identifying the factory.

Did you have a question?

Good luck,
Cal

Hi, Brenda,
Your pot has signature, Shunko-sei, not Harumitsu-sei,although the same characters. Kato Shunko kiln from Seto supplyed Morimura-gumi(exporter) blank porcelains, and also had its own, "Shunko" brand porcelain like this one in the Meiji period, Japan.
Best Regards,
Emiko
