I inherited a pair of Satsuma vases. I have been
trying to research which period they are from.
Are they Seizan Meji period 1868-1912?
I really would appreciate your help. Thank you.

Hi Evelyn,

The mark is indeed Seizan 清山.
But I don't think these are Meiji vases.
I have a Seizan vase with almost the same mark with the same cracked-like surface and it was dated early Showa circa 1930.
The black characters: the number 13 in Japanese: 十三, might be a production or model number.

Dear Evelyn

I will add that I find the triangular patterns in gold goop in your first picture are often characteristic of c.1930s era Satsuma. You see it often in antique shops.

Thank you for the info. Do you have an idea how much they are worth? I need an estimate. Thank you. | Associations | Articles | Exhibitions | Galleries |
