Subject:Origin please of this hand carved wood mask Indonesia? or ?
Posted By: Vi Mon, Apr 23, 2012 IP: 24.21.154.174

Hello, Can anyone tell me the origin of this multi-face hand carved mask? The significance of the number of faces? It's about 3 feet tall. Any info will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

This is not a mask because by definition a mask is an article worn on the face. This is too large to be worn. It may be a shield but the bottom of the carving suggests that it is probably a standing sculpture. I dont know where it is from but it is definitely not Indonesian. It is not a tribal mask either as the carving is very poor. On a tribal Yunnan or Tibetan mask, for example, the small smiling faces would be little carved skulls.
