Subject:Need Japanese Ukiyo-e moku hanga identification help, etc
Posted By: Lita K Wed, Apr 23, 2014 IP: 108.20.7.124

I purchased this chūban moku hanga and would like help identifying it, etc. such as artist, title, censor/date seal, publisher seal, translate inscription, etc. (there's also something in the margin, near the hanmoto, etc

Any assistance you can offer is greatly appreciated.

I am a novice collector and wish to learn as much as possible about the various pieces in my collection

The artist is Ikkeisai Yoshiiku (1833-1904). Your print is from a series of Genji prints. The genji mon (see link) in the 3rd picture and the number 12 make me think it represents the 12th chapter of the book; Tale of the Genji (Genji Monogatari)).

I'm having some trouble with the date seal. I think it is a monkey year, which corresponds to 1860, 1872, 1884, or 1896.

A picture of the whole print may help.

Cheers,
Stan

It's print #12 of a chuban format series 'Genji gojûyon jô' (Folding book of the 54 chapters of the Tale of the Genji), signed 'Ikkeisai Yoshiiku' and published in Tokyo in 1871 by Yoruzuya Magobei. The series was originally issued on a oban sheet of paper (cfr example) that was cut in 1/2.

I'll have look at the Hiroshige print later.

Thank you so much. :) I greatly appreciate the time you have taken to respond.

I'm fascinated by all of this and am reading the website you linked, as well as researching more about Ikkeisai Yoshiiku.

This is one of the things I love about collecting art... every time I get a new piece, I spend time reading about the artist, the period and so on, and the consequence is that I end up learning about additional artists as well as art forms. I love it.
