Subject:Chen Chi Kwan Watercolor "Delectable" on EBay

There is a Chen Chi Kwan Watercolor on Ebay. Current bid is $3000. Last year Chen Chi Kwan's work went for between $5500 and $125,000. Can someone help me understand why such a wide spectrum Also do you think this painting will rise in value in 20 years. Thanks in advance.

Hard to say is probably the best answer to both of your questions. This looks ok to me but is a minor work of his and not in good condition, so is unlikely to appreciate more rapidly than his other work. I happen to love Chen's painting, and as the list of exhibitions on the website suggests others do too, but whether there will be a market for it in 20 years is unknowable. It's clear that his works are not as sought after as a number of 20th century PRC painters. As to last year's prices, there's probably a range in quality, complexity, rarity, provenance, inscriptions, etc that accounts for most of this. Items at the low end may be fakes, items at the high end may have benefited from a bidding war, it's hard to say without seeing the pictures and knowing the circumstances.
