Subject:Please, help to identify the mark on the bronce tiger
Posted By: Alexander Mon, Apr 20, 2015 IP: 188.134.23.185

I would greatly appreciate if someone could help me to translate or write with modern hieroglyphs the mark engraved on the bronze tiger.
Is it Chinese or Japanese?
Thank you very much in advance!

It is a Japanese maker's mark for a Meiji period okimono (ornament for display) of a tiger, made for export probably ca 1890-1900.

The mark reads 東都住 政時作 or 'Tôto ju, Masatoki saku' (Eastern Capital resident, made by Masatoki).
Toto or the Eastern Capital is a Japanese synonym for Tokyo.

Can you post an additional image of the complete object?

Guy.

Dear Guy, thank you for your help!
Surely appreciated a lot.
Can this be also read in Chinese as e.g. dong dou zhu xing shi zuo? (Eastern Capital resident, made by Zhen Shi)
I also added a better picture

Your item is 100% Japanese, Meiji period. Nothing to do with China and therefore the mark must be read as I indicated. Search for 'bronze tiger' here at the forum and you'll find numerous other and similar okimono of tigers with their detailed description.

You have a nice and very collectable example.

Guy.
