Subject:Jiaqing marking
Posted By: Kerry Sat, May 30, 2015 IP: 76.124.246.213

I have a very large vase with a Jiaqing era mark on the bottom. The mark color is red and it also has a red border around it. Not sure if it is authentically from this era or perhaps made much later in Macau for example. it stands about 40 inches in height. Trying to determine an honest value for the piece. Your expert opinions are greatly valued.

Your suspicion about this being made much later in Macao is well placed. The earliest such floor vases in this quasi rose medallion pattern were made in Macao and Hong Kong around the 1960's. They are made in a number of other places around Asia nowadays. While some have decorative value, they're often sold around the world as antiques in the shops of ill-informed and unscrupulous dealers.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Another dead give-away that this was not an authentic piece from the Jiaqing period is the fact that the vase is exactly 36 inches tall. I measured it with a tape measure over the weekend and found that it is precisely 36" high. I sincerely doubt that if it were truly a vase constructed in China more then 200 years ago that it would have been made to such precise English manufacturing tolerances.
