Subject:Tall Chinese Floor Vase 36" plus
Posted By: Todd Wed, Aug 05, 2015 IP: 172.91.128.42

Purchased in the southern US around 1960s by a great aunt who long ago passed away. No idea about its history.
The bottom is rough and unfinished.

Blank vases from Jingdezhen were being transfer-decorated in similar quasi-Rose Medallion motifs by ornamentation factories in both Hong Kong and Macao around the time your great aunt purchased this one. Size matters even in decorative porcelains, so I'd guess this vase might still be worth upwards of $500 on a good day at auction.

Perhaps someone else can fathom the seal script in the mark.

Best regards,

Bill H.

I can't help with the seal marks, but we used to buy/sell these vases (as reproductions) with their wooden bases by the truckloads in Southern California in the 1980s. I don't recall seeing them prior to about 1980.

They came in pairs, in a variety of pallets/motifs, and in several sizes up to about six feet tall with base.

They also came clean and shiny like yours, or aged.

There were also matching garden stools, planters, and fish bowls available, we likely had thirty or forty SKUs in the collection.

The vases etc were heavy yet fragile, the boxes they came in were bulky yet not very sturdy, they were not well marked, and had to be stored (in pairs) according to style, pallet, motif, and size. Then there were the matching wood bases which came in several sizes and two different colors. In other words, they caused a lot of headaches and backaches.

The collection did sell very well and made a huge visual impact both in the shop, and in the customers' homes.

Cheers
Gman
