Subject:Carved Frog - Maybe Japanese
Posted By: Margie Tue, Nov 24, 2015 IP: 98.253.238.56

The writing on this frog doesn't appear to be Japanese. Could someone identify it and read it?
Even though some is broken off, I can't tell whether it's wood or ceramic. It's sort of crumbly on the inside.
Thanks for any ideas.

The square seal reads 'Futami Okitama Jinja' (Futani Okitama shrine) and the frog refers to the numerous statues of frogs around the shrine.
The oval mark is probably a maker's mark reading 'Ôda' (Ooda).

I presume that this wooden okimono was sold to tourists, visiting the shrine, situated next to 'Meoto Iwa' or the Married Couple Rocks in Futani, Mie province.

Date late 19th to early 20th century I guess.

Guy.
