Subject:Wood block print of horse
Posted By: Begley Sat, Jan 23, 2016 IP: 172.56.38.227 I found what I think is a woodblock print of a horse at thrift/junk store in town and I think it could be something but I am not sure. It struck me when I saw it. I am not astute at Asian Art but my guess is that it is Chinese? The things I notice about it is that it is not on ordinary paper and whomever made it, took a lot of time carving the mane and tail. It is 2-color in gray and black with 2 red stamps at bottom left and a vertical black stamp at bottom right (you don't see this one when framed). The picture is horizontal, 17x11.5. I took some up-close photos of it. |

Posted By: Guy Sun, Jan 24, 2016 It's a Japanese woodblock print by Tomikichiro Tokuriki (1902-1999), published ca 1950s by the Uchida Company in Kyoto. Tomikichiro Tokuriki was one of the members of the Sosaku Hanga movement. Estmation is around 100-120 $, but value can increase. |

Posted By: Kelley Mon, Jan 25, 2016 Thank you so much for you speedy and expert response; I tried researching the print but didn't know where to start--Now, I have a name to work with. Do the stamps have separate meanings? I read that one stamp can be the artist's signature and one may be a saying. The 3rd black stamp is really curious to me---do you know the meanings of each? |
