Subject:Wood block print of horse
Posted By: Begley Sat, Jan 23, 2016 IP: 172.56.38.227

I found what I think is a woodblock print of a horse at thrift/junk store in town and I think it could be something but I am not sure. It struck me when I saw it. I am not astute at Asian Art but my guess is that it is Chinese? The things I notice about it is that it is not on ordinary paper and whomever made it, took a lot of time carving the mane and tail. It is 2-color in gray and black with 2 red stamps at bottom left and a vertical black stamp at bottom right (you don't see this one when framed). The picture is horizontal, 17x11.5. I took some up-close photos of it.

I am wondering if it is something I should be extra careful with. If so, I am willing to have it conserved; but if it is a common print, I'd rather not spend the money on it (small budget). I am especially hoping someone can tell me what the stamps say. If someone has a rough idea of value, I'd be most grateful.
Thank you,
Kelley

It's a Japanese woodblock print by Tomikichiro Tokuriki (1902-1999), published ca 1950s by the Uchida Company in Kyoto. Tomikichiro Tokuriki was one of the members of the Sosaku Hanga movement. Estmation is around 100-120 $, but value can increase.

Thank you so much for you speedy and expert response; I tried researching the print but didn't know where to start--Now, I have a name to work with. Do the stamps have separate meanings? I read that one stamp can be the artist's signature and one may be a saying. The 3rd black stamp is really curious to me---do you know the meanings of each?
Thanks again,
Kelley

For the reading of the Uchida seals, have a look at the link below.

The print is sealed in red with the character 'Tomi' (富).

The octagonal seal is the mark of the Uchida publishing firm of Kyoto. They make reproductions of classic woodblock prints and also do some originals with their staff artists.

Their prints are primarily tourist-grade souvenir sort of things, so any conservation efforts would probably not be warranted. It's of decorative value only.

Thanks for the print info and links--This is the most helpful and educational forum I have used for quite some time.
